Playdate Injury

Today we had a playdate at our house. Usually playdates are pretty stress-free. As soon as the friend arrives the girls run upstairs or downstairs and I only hear from them if they are hungry or need Barbie clothes changed.

Today's playdate was a nightmare. Juliet was super grumpy and was having a temper tantrum because she wanted me to pick which pj's she should wear for rest time but she didn't like anything I chose. In the middle of her screaming, I heard crying from the basement. At first I was confused, as the only crying that usually happens in our house is from Juliet. So I left screaming Juliet to investigate.

I met friend at the top of the basement stairs holding bloody toilet paper and crying "Help me". I felt like I was going to have a heart attack! Where was the blood coming from, what happened? Of course, 4 year olds are not the greatest at relating accurate events. So all I got from them was scissors and "I have blood!" (this was from friend of course). Crap! I used to be a lifeguard and have lots of experience dealing with blood and minor other injuries. But somehow, having another child injured while on my watch was really freaking me out.

I managed to get friend up to our bathroom where our first aid kit is and the mantra "stop the bleeding" spurred me into action. I've got to say, Juliet falling and cutting her tongue almost in half did not freak me out as much as having another person's kid blood literally on my hands. Luckily, my first aid training and the other voice in my head that said "stay calm" was louder than the part of me freaking out inside and I was able to keep it together, bandage the finger effectively and calm the almost hysterical friend down.

I guess when it comes to your own kids, you know them so well, that you know what's normal for them. You know if their hysteria is just that, or something more serious. I kept playing over and over in my mind the thought "am I doing this right?".

Thankfully, the bleeding stopped, friends stopped crying and after 20 minutes of watching Barbie Fashion Fairytale, friend told me confidently that she could still play even with her finger bandaged up.

Man, do I feel bad and guilty and horrible. Thankfully friend was okay. The whole episode was so stressful for me. The kids were over it in a heartbeat but I'm still feeling the stress and anxiety from the incident. I think it will take a bit for me to shake it off. Much like the time I accidentally bumped Ainsley's head on her crib rail when she was 6 weeks old and felt guilty for DAYS (and I still haven't forgotten it).

Giveaway: Monster Jam Tickets!!!

The Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour is coming to Rogers Centre January 21 and 22, 2012 and we are giving away a set of Tickets to either the Jan 21st or 22nd show.

Below is some information on what to expect at the show.

What are monster trucks?

Approximately 11 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, monster trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 9,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, monster trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster trucks can travel 125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 25 feet in the air.

What happens at a monster truck event?

At USHRA-sanctioned events, monster trucks face off in two different forms of competition -- side-by-side racing and freestyle. Side-by-side racing is traditional bracket racing, where the first truck (with the least amount of penalties) that crosses the finish line is the winner. The freestyle competition allows drivers a limited amount of time on an open floor to show off their skills.

Who are the stars of the Monster Jam Series?
There are approximately 300 monster trucks in action in the United States. Many only make appearances at local events and dont compete on a national basis. The USHRA selects the fastest, safest, and most modern vehicles to compete in the Monster Jam Series. The top name monster trucks, those who run in the Monster Jam Series, often have duplicate trucks for multiple appearances throughout the country. Some of the top names include: Grave Digger, Maximum Destruction, Avenger, Bounty Hunter, Blue Thunder, Monster Mutt, El Toro and Bulldozer.

Where do they get the cars to crush?
Cars, as well as vans, buses, motor homes, airplanes and ambulances, are attained from local junkyards and returned after each event. Full-size steel body cars are the vehicles typically crushed during an event. More than 3,000 cars are crushed each year

The official Web site of the Monster Jam Series features driver profiles and links, along with standings, news, schedules, ticket information, multimedia and more. In addition, a number of drivers maintain their own sites.

McQueen and the brand new North Nightmare will compete against the likes of Grave Digger®, Monster Mutt® Dalmatian, Mohawk Warrior℠, Maximum Destruction®, Avenger, Wrecking Crew, Aftershock, Krazy Train and Crushstation. Monster Jam® is sanctioned by the United States Hot Rod Association®. Trucks are subject to change without notice.

Rogers Centre Monster Jam® shows are scheduled for Saturday, January 21 at 7pm and Sunday, January 22 at 2pm.
